HydroTech Inc. rehabilitates Long Beach VA Medical Center sewer connection

Long Beach VA HospitalWhen Majestyc Construction of Palmvale, California was awarded the contract to rehabilitate the Long Beach, California Veterans Administration Medical Center, they called upon HydroTech Inc.’s expertise in trenchless technologies to access and design solutions to repair a 50-70 year old lateral line connection from the Medical Center to the city’s sanitary sewer system.

An initial video inspection revealed severe hydrogen sulfide damage. Additional issues discovered were ground water infiltration, intrusion of roots from surrounding mature trees, and differences between the map specifications and the actual sizes of some of the pipe sections.

A construction plan for resolving these issues was reviewed and approved by the United States Army Corp of Engineers and the Veterans Administration engineers. HydroTech used their state-of-the-art cured-in-place (CIPP) pipelining system by engineering the design for each liner used. This careful evaluation and attention to design resulted in a 50+ year life and meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s requirements. This life span is twice as long as the original lateral line that was rehabilitated, and the work was completed at a fraction of the cost of a new line installation.

One of the challenges faced with his project was the bypass of sewage and traffic control along the busy Pacific Coast Highway. This was accomplished with the cooperation of Caltrans. Another concern was the high build up of hydrogen sulfide.  If hydrogen sulfide is allowed to build up, it can concentrate and become a highly toxic and possibly explosive gas when released.

All of HydroTech’s employees are certified in safe confined space entry and know how to deal with this potentially dangerous by-product of sewage. All safety precautions were successfully executed to protect our crews and the general public.
